Neighborhood Foot Care Patrol®

Neighborhood Foot Care Patrol® is a Nurses & Neighbors Collaborative health and mobility initiative. We bring foot health education and screenings directly into the community — with a focus on older adults, individuals experiencing homelessness, and underserved neighbors.

The Patrol was launched in late summer 2025 with the recruitment and training of volunteer nurses and community partners. By October 2025, the team began delivering screenings at libraries, shelters, health fairs, and community sites across Delaware.

Since then, the Patrol has reached more than 240 individuals through 21 outreach events, providing foot health assessments, education, and referrals — often addressing needs that might otherwise go unmet. 

We are kicking season 2 at the Delaware Diabetes Expo on Nov 12, 2026 at Memorial Hall, Delaware State Fairgrounds, Harrington, Delaware.

Our feet help us stand, balance, and move through the day. Foot pain, loss of feeling, skin problems, or shoes that do not fit well can make walking harder and increase the risk of a fall.

Caring for our feet is one way to protect mobility. When people can move safely and comfortably, it is easier to stay active and independent as they age. Staying physically active supports health and is associated with living independently longer.

Foot mobility affects how we live—and can help us keep doing what matters to us for years to come.

 We follow a simple, evidence-informed framework called CPR for Foot Care™**:

• C = Check – Look for skin breakdown and signs of infectio
• P = Protect – Provide clean socks if needed and practical education to reduce injury
• R = Referral – Connect people to timely medical care before problems become serious

Our trained patrol volunteers will:

• Screen for infection, skin breakdown, and injuries
• Educate on daily foot care and safe footwear
• Refer to medical care before problems become serious

**CPR for Foot Care is an initiative of the Scottish Diabetes Foot Action Group.

Our clinical members bring training and experience in foot health to Neighborhood Foot Care Patrol® events. They provide screening and education within their professional scope and help neighbors find appropriate follow-up care.   Member profiles coming soon.

Neighborhood Foot Care Patrol® began with support from the Highmark Delaware Fund at the Delaware Community Foundation. We are grateful for the funding that helped us train volunteers, bring screenings into community settings, and learn from our first season.

Our work also depends on community organizations that welcome the Patrol, volunteers who help events run smoothly, and foot health professionals who provide resources and follow-up care.
